Steve and Abi Bartonís home was struck by lightning in 2009 and was destroyed by fire.

On a stormy afternoon in May 2009 Steve and Abi Bartonís home got struck by lightning and was destroyed by a fire. The Barton family, with a 2-year-old son and 1-month-old daughter were suddenly homeless. Six short months later, thanks to the help of family, friends, the community and builder Shayne Schroeder, their lives and home were restored. Their home is now better than ever.

Why did you decide on this home: After looking for an existing home to purchase for several months, we decided to build. Then, in May of 2009, lightning struck our home, causing a fire, which resulted in needing to rebuild. When deciding on a builder, we decided to have Shayne Schroeder Custom Homes rebuild due to Shayneís reputation of high quality workmanship.

One thing Iíd change about my house: Since we have now built this home twice, just about everything is just as we would have it.

The Bartonsí granite countered kitchen is large and open and anchored on one side by a dining area and the other a breakfast area.

Best home project Iíve completed here and why: After the house fire, we completely changed the kitchen and the master bathroom with the expert help of our builder, Shayne Schroeder. In the kitchen, we removed the wall between the kitchen and formal dining room which caused almost everything in the kitchen to be relocated. In the master bathroom, the Jacuzzi bathtub and original walk-in shower were removed and replaced with a large, tiled walk-in shower.

I save lots of money on my home by Icenyne (spray-in insulation) insulation.

A home item I canít live without (and why): We absolutely love our Roomba, which is a robotic vacuum cleaner that operates while we are away at work.

My homeís best feature: The great room is our homeís best feature.

If my kitchen walls could talk: they would tell stories of our childrenís laughter as they raced around the kitchen and through the living room.

What I like most about my home (and why) - We love the warmth and openness of the living area. It is the part of our home that we spend the majority of our time.

What I like least about my home (and why) - We wish we had a larger garage. There never seems to be enough room for everything.

My homeís most complimented feature - the Travertine tile, the colors of the walls and trim, the amount of storage, our homeís overall warmth.

I have an impressive collection of glass water pitchers.

I will always have space in my home for our friends and family.
